TikTok would be close to “losing” one of the key elements of its current great success: music. And according to an open letter revealed by Universal Music, one of the largest entertainment conglomerates on the planet thanks to its impact on the music industry, the social network offered a “lower value” than agreed for the music rights. from various artists such as Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, among others.
In the same document, Universal Music noted that there was a breakdown in the conversations they carried out with TikTok after it decided to “build a business based on music without paying a fair value for the music.”
It should be remembered that the current contract between the group and the famous short video platform expires on February 2. However, and after the recent breakdown of negotiations, the future of the social network could be in danger of fulfilling what Universal declared.
What happened between Universal and TikTok?
Within the series of conversations carried out by representatives of both companies, various topics stand out, such as adequate compensation for artists and composers due to the use of their songs, freely, by users of the social network.
Likewise, digital security for users was discussed as well as protection for artists in the face of the growing risk of Artificial Intelligence. Despite the variety of issues, it seems that the agreement between TikTok and Universal Music did not reach an agreement because the social network, as revealed by Universal, tried to “intimidate” them into accepting an agreement for a lower value than the one previously agreed upon. They offered for the use of the songs of the artists belonging to Universal.
Likewise, Universal confessed that TikTok wanted to pay a small percentage of what other platforms of this type pay.
TikTok’s response
After Universal Music’s statement, TikTok released another statement in which it described the claims made by the group as “false”, in addition to pointing out the “sadness and disappointment” that Universal Music caused by the “greed” it showed over its artists. .
Likewise, TikTok noted that Universal decided to “abandon the powerful support that a platform of more than one billion users” can offer as a free promotion. Due to the above, and according to various sources close to the “lawsuit” between both brands, Universal would withdraw all the music under its license, from TikTok, as of January 31. It should be remembered that, according to Universal, the platform only represents 1% of its total income.
