A set of six pairs of sports shoes that were worn by Michael Jordan during the six years in which he won the NBA championship has been auctioned by Sotheby’s, achieving a record price of eight million dollars.

The auction house Sotheby’s announced this Friday that this collection, called the “Dynasty Collection”, includes the models Air Jordan VI (1991), Air Jordan VII (1992), Air Jordan VIII (1993), Air Jordan XI (1996), Air Jordan XII (1997) and Air Jordan XIV (1998). Each pair of boots, emblematic of Jordan’s career, features the signature of the legendary player, recognized as one of the best athletes of all time.

The amount reached at the auction sets a new record, with $8,032,800 being the highest amount ever paid for a pair of used sneakers.

Brahm Wachter, head of Modern Collectibles at Sotheby’s, said in a statement that this achievement underlines Jordan’s position as the “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time).

“Today’s record price is a testament to the GOAT. Without a doubt, the Dynasty Collection is among the most important compilations of sports memorabilia in history. [Un] truly incomparable moment and milestone in auction history, the sale of these six championship-worn tennis shoes will likely never be replicated,” Watcher noted.

This new auction represents the second-highest figure for Michael Jordan memorabilia, surpassed only by the $10.1 million jersey worn in Game 1 of the 1998 “Last Dance” Finals. A pair of sneakers worn in Game 2 of those finals sold for $2,238,000 in April, marking at the time the highest amount paid for a pair of sneakers.

In addition to the pairs of sneakers, the auction winner obtained a valuable collection of unique photographs, signed by Bill Smith. These images capture Michael Jordan in iconic moments, such as the 1992, 1993, 1996 and 1998 championship celebrations, showing him in the locker room, smiling and wearing only one shoe.
