A former member of President Donald Trump’s administration, Mike Gill, died after being shot after a violent carjacking in Washington, DC.
During the incident last Monday afternoon, an armed individual got into his car and shot Gill. The incident occurred around 5:45 pm in the 900 block of K Street NW, a central area of the US capital.
The suspect was identified as Artell Cunningham, 28, who attempted to commit another carjacking an hour later and then confronted several people and demanded the keys to their vehicles.
Among Cunningham’s victims was Alberto Vasquez, Jr., 35, who was shot and killed in an attempted carjacking at 3rd and N Streets Northeast. Cunningham was later killed by law enforcement after a confrontation in the early morning hours.
Gill’s death was confirmed by his wife, Kristina, who, through a statement released by FOX 5 DC, thanked the show of support for the tragic event.
“It is with deep sadness that I wish to inform the community of the passing of my husband, Mike Gill,” Kristina said. “His sudden departure from him has left a void in our lives that can never be filled.”
“In this time of grief, we are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family, friends and the community, and we extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who reached out to offer condolences and assistance,” Gill added.
During the Donald Trump administration, Gill was chief of staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Subsequently, he served as Senior Vice President of Capital Markets at the Housing Policy Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting access to affordable housing.
The wave of carjackings in Washington, DC, has generated frustration and concern among citizens, and comes almost four months after Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, was kidnapped at gunpoint.
