The National Migration Institute (INM) of Mexico officially reported on a rescue operation carried out this Sunday, where the salvation of 73 migrants was achieved, including Mexican citizens and people from Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru and Venezuela, who were in danger in the waters of the Rio Grande.

The immigration authorities of the Mexican Government detailed that these rescue operations were carried out in three different actions, carried out between January 29 and February 2, by elements of the ‘Beta Group’ of the INM in Piedras Negras, located in the state from Coahuila, northern Mexico, according to the EFE agency.

In the first incident, the agents found 17 people on the move who were stranded on an islet near the Rio Grande.

This group, made up of 12 adults and five accompanied minors, was trying to reach the United States irregularly, but they were prevented by low temperatures and strong currents in the area known as El Molcajete. Among them, six migrants from Nicaragua, five from Guatemala, four from Ecuador and two from Venezuela were identified.

After being taken to the river bank on the Mexican side and their health status verified, they were transferred to the Casa del Migrante Frontera Digna shelter.

Other incidents

In a second incident, elements of the Mexican Migration Institute responded to a warning call and went to the banks of the Río Bravo, specifically in the Morelos neighborhood. There, they helped an adult woman from Honduras and her one-year-old son, who were in the water with mild signs of hypothermia.

After providing them with thermal sheets, they were taken to the shore on the Mexican side, where a Red Cross ambulance took them to the “Salvador Chavarría” Hospital for evaluation and medical care.

In a third situation, a group of 54 migrants who decided to return to the Mexican side due to the strong currents and dangerous waters were located on an islet in the Río Bravo, in Santo Domingo.

This group included 17 accompanied minors and 37 adults from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras, the EFE agency detailed. The rescued Mexicans were taken to the hospital, while the foreigners were taken to immigration facilities.

Additionally, during an airboat tour of the Río Bravo, INM elements located the bodies of three alleged male migrants who did not have identification.

The State Prosecutor’s Office took charge of the survey and began the corresponding investigation into this unfortunate discovery.
