In an alarming case in Texas, two women and a man face serious charges after being arrested for child endangerment. Robert Mason, 33, Jennifer Trevino, 32, and Aracely Rocha, 22, were arrested Thursday and now face four second-degree felony charges each, all related to a disturbing act: blowing fentanyl smoke at the face of a baby just 19 days old.
The three adults were booked into the Taylor County Jail, with bonds set at $100,000 for Trevino and Rocha, and $105,000 for Mason, who also faces an additional charge of obstruction.
The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest following a traffic stop on January 25, Law&Crime reported.
Agents from the Narcotics Division made the stop on a vehicle that was transporting the three defendants, along with the newborn girl. The stop was carried out after one of the occupants allegedly dumped trash in front of the Frontier Inn & Suites in Abilene, Texas, where they were staying.
A search of the vehicle revealed the presence of fentanyl both inside the car and in the baby’s diaper bag.
Fifty-six fentanyl pills and various items of drug paraphernalia intended for fentanyl use were seized, according to reports by PEOPLE magazine based on a probable cause affidavit.
They smoked fentanyl in front of children
During interviews conducted at the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, it was learned that the adults had been regularly smoking fentanyl in the presence of the four children, who shared two adjoining rooms at the hotel.
The affidavit shared by Law&Crime details that the trio also confessed to having intentionally exposed fentanyl smoke to the 19-day-old baby’s face as a method to calm her cries during the last few days.
The situation reached critical levels when authorities observed that the newborn “had difficulty breathing.” Given this, Child Protective Services was contacted and took custody of the child.
So far, it has not been reported whether the defendants have hired lawyers or if hearing dates have been set. The health of the baby and the other three children is being evaluated after being taken to a hospital.
This shocking incident highlights the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a thorough investigation to ensure the safety and well-being of the minors involved.
