President Joe Biden warned on Sunday, after two days of bombings against pro-Iranian militia facilities in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, that “new actions” have not been ruled out, which could even take place on Iranian territory.
“If necessary, I will order additional measures, including against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its personnel and facilities, to address the series of attacks against United States forces and facilities,” the president warned in a letter to Congress. US.
Biden defended the bombings against pro-Iranian militia targets in the Middle East and said that with them the United States is taking “necessary and proportionate measures”, “compatible with international law” and with “the exercise of the inherent right of the United States to legitimate defense, as reflected in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations.”
The US president sent the letter to “keep Congress fully informed,” in accordance with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148).
According to the Democratic president, the US bombings are the response to the attacks that militias affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have carried out against US personnel and facilities in Iraq and Syria, which “have put under serious threat” to US and allied personnel.
These attacks “have continued” and “have spread to a third country,” he said, referring to last week’s attack that killed three American soldiers at a base in northeastern Jordan.
In response, last Friday the US military began a first round of airstrikes against Iranian-backed groups in Syria and Iraq. According to the United States Central Command (Centcom), in the attacks against the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran more than 85 targets were hit.
Although the United States is still evaluating the results of these attacks, according to the Iraqi Government and the NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, they have left 45 dead in both countries, some of them civilians.
“The attacks have been carried out to deter the IRGC and affiliated militia groups from conducting or supporting further attacks against United States personnel and facilities and have been carried out in a manner designed to limit the risk of a escalation and avoid civilian casualties,” Biden said.
On Saturday, the United States and the United Kingdom launched another wave of attacks in Yemen using fighter jets and ships against 13 sites associated with the Iranian-backed Houthis’ weapons storage facilities, missile systems, air defense systems and radars. .
In several television interviews this morning, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan warned that the United States intends to continue attacks against Iranian-backed groups after two consecutive days of bombings against targets in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
“We intend to conduct additional strikes and actions to continue to send a clear message that the United States will respond when our forces are attacked or people are killed,” Sullivan said in an interview with NBC News.
