World leaders mourned this Tuesday the death of the former president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, in a helicopter accident.

One of the first to speak out about Piñera’s death was the current president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, who highlighted the “positive attitude” of the former Chilean president towards Uruguay.

“I met President Piñera several years ago. He always had a positive attitude towards Uruguay and personally. As an example, it is enough to name his support with the logistics offered for the arrival of the vaccines during the pandemic. To the Chileans and their family my condolences. RIP,” Lacalle Pou wrote on her X social network account.

In a brief statement, the Argentine government, chaired by Javier Milei, also regretted the death of Piñera. Patricia Bullrich, current Argentine Security Minister, published a longer text, saying:

“He leaves us a democrat, with deep convictions and whom I will remember with great affection. “His legacy of commitment to his country and to Latin America will endure in our collective conscience.”

The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, mourned the death of the former Chilean president and offered his condolences to the family.

“We express our deep regret for the death of the former president of Chile Sebastián Piñera. Our condolences to his family and friends, and we accompany all the Chilean people in these moments of sadness,” Almagro said on social networks.

Santiago Peña, current president of Paraguay, regretted the death of the former Chilean president and sent his condolences “to his family, friends and the Chilean people in this moment of pain.”

The president of the government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, said he was “dismayed” by the news.

“During his mandate, we strengthened ties between our two countries and together we made COP 25 possible at a crucial moment in the fight against the climate emergency. Rest in peace,” Sánchez published.

Former presidents remember it

Former Argentine president Mauricio Macri fired his “dear friend” and said that he was “committed like no one else to Chile.” In his account on the social network

The former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales (2006-2019) sent his condolences to the people of Chile. “I was in numerous international meetings with him and, although we did not agree ideologically, we worked side by side on several issues,” Morales wrote on his social networks.

Mario Abdo Benítez, former president of Paraguay, regretted this Tuesday the ‘sad news’ of the death of the former ruler. “In the hardest moments, Piñera was always supporting Paraguay and the entire region,” he published in X, along with a photograph of both.

“We are very shocked by this sad news. My solidarity hug to the entire Piñera family and the Chilean people,” concluded Abdo Benítez.
