Former President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel should resign from her position.
In a Newsmax interview at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump was asked if he thinks McDaniel should step aside. He responded affirmatively and said, “Well, I think she knows. I think she understands it,” according to NBC News.
The former president met with McDaniel at his club on Monday, sources confirmed to Fox News.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform after the meeting that McDaniel was a “friend.” However, she warned that she would urge changes in the RNC after the Feb. 24 Republican presidential primary in South Carolina, vital in the race for the Republican nomination.
“Ronna is now head of the RNC and I will make a decision the day after the South Carolina primary on my recommendations for the growth of the RNC,” the New York mogul also wrote.
McDaniel loyal to Trump
Trump’s desire for change comes at a time when McDaniel has shown loyalty to the former president.
After the former president’s victory in the New Hampshire primary, the still chair of the RNC urged Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley to drop out of the race and unite around Trump.
“I’m looking at the math and the path forward and I don’t see it for Nikki Haley,” McDaniel said during an interview on Fox News after the results in New Hampshire were known. “I think she has run a great campaign, but I think there is a message that comes out from the voters that is very clear. “We need to unite around our eventual nominee, which will be Donald Trump.”
The statements were harshly criticized by the former South Carolina governor, who said that the Republican National Committee stopped being an honest broker.
It should be remembered that McDaniel is the longest-serving RNC chairwoman in modern history. She was nominated by Trump shortly after his victory in the 2016 presidential election and has been re-elected three times: 2019, 2021 and last year.
