A video is circulating on social networks that has generated all kinds of feelings, especially helplessness and despair when seeing the anguish experienced by a group of orcas that were trapped in the middle of a large block of ice in Japan.

It was this Monday when a group of fishermen discovered these orcas that were stranded, in the middle of the ice, one kilometer from the Rausu coast, on the Shiretoko peninsula, in Japan, so they immediately called the authorities. local to request their help and thus save these animals.

In images taken by Wildlife Pro LLC, which researches Shiretoko sea lions and other wildlife, between 16 and 17 orcas, including several calves, are identified. They are crowded in a small area of open water, sticking their heads out to breathe between the ice sheets.

A pod of about 10 killer whales have been found trapped in a small gap in drift ice off the coast of Rausu, a town in northeastern Hokkaido. According to NHK, “the town can only watch and hope that the drift ice breaks apart, allowing the orcas to escape.” pic.twitter.com/AKLnGvgU2O

After evaluating the situation, unfortunately, the authorities indicated that due to the poor access conditions to the orcas, it was impossible to launch any type of rescue operation with boats.

“The people can only watch and hope that the drifting ice breaks, allowing the orcas to escape,” representatives told Japanese public television NHK.

“I saw about 13 orcas with their heads sticking out of a hole in the ice,” Seiichiro Tsuchiya, a marine life expert who filmed the stricken animals using a drone, told NHK. “They seemed to be struggling to breathe, and included 3 or 4 calves,” he added.

The heavy snowfall recorded since Monday in Tokyo and other areas of central Japan, which lasted for most of the night, left transportation suspensions on some of the capital’s main lines and power outages until today morning. .
