The Government of Ecuador demonstrated that it is focused on promoting the sporting performance of its country for the coming years and for this reason they presented this Thursday to the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) their candidacy to become the headquarters of the Copa América 2028; The measure was taken after running out of this year’s edition, which ended up being designated for the United States.

The intention of being able to host the most important soccer competition on the American continent was delivered by the country’s president himself, Daniel Noboa, who presented it to the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, during a meeting at the Carondelet Palace located in the city of Quito; The president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), Francisco Egas, also made an appearance at the event.

President Noboa explained that his Government’s intention is to place Ecuador as a clear example of sports development throughout the South American region with the organization of a large-scale event such as the Copa América; He also highlighted the desire to promote foreign investment in the country to generate more employment opportunities for citizens.

“Being here and talking about future organizations and headquarters is always hopeful and opens the imagination of everything one can do. I think this is going to be continuous; “We are going to continue working well,” said Alejandro Domínguez, having already celebrated a final of the Copa Libertadores in the city of Guayaquil in 2022; In that year, Flamengo and Atlético Paranaense from Brazil faced each other.

Domínguez also valued Daniel Noboa’s attitude in expressing his desire to support sport on the continent and especially for his “leadership and determination” in favor of football; He emphasized that the performance of football in Ecuador has increased considerably in recent years with Independiente del Valle and Liga de Quito as the last two champions of the Copa Sudamericana.

This would not be the first time that Ecuador becomes the host of the Copa América if they are chosen, because they already took the lead in the 1947 and 1993 editions; On both occasions the champion of these competitions was the Argentine team.

The Ecuadorian team is now searching for its championship in the 2024 edition that will take place in the United States; Currently, the tricolor team has positioned itself as one of the best in Conmebol in recent years thanks to its achievements in the South American qualifiers for the various FIFA World Cups.
