On May 30, a concert by the American singer Taylor Swift will take place at the new Santiago Bernabéu, home of Real Madrid, as part of ‘The Eras Tour’.
Said Swift concert could put Spain’s LaLiga and Real Madrid’s calendar in a bind.
This great event that is being prepared in the new stadium of the white team, suitable as a multipurpose venue after its spectacular renovation, may come into conflict with the last day of the championship. The date of the concert is close to the final date of the competition from which if everything is equal the champion could emerge.
Given this situation, Real Madrid has submitted a request to LaLiga regarding the date of its last game of the season to have more time to prepare for Taylor Swift’s concert at the Bernabéu the following week.
Real Madrid, which could be looking for a second additional date for another Taylor Swift concert at the Bernabéu, should have to face Betis on May 25-26 (dates scheduled for matchday 38)
The problem with changing the date of that match is that both Real Madrid and Real Betis could be playing something on the last day of LaLiga, so that match would have to be played with a unified schedule with the rest of the teams involved.
Taking into account the four days that Taylor Swift’s team needs to change cities between concerts is another factor to take into account.
LaLiga usually decrees a unified schedule almost always on a Sunday, but there are differences: while the games in the penultimate (37) are on Sundays (in eight of the last 10 seasons), with the last one there is more variety.
In addition, encounters are usually grouped according to what is at stake. If he can, he puts those games at the same time: the fight for the title, the fight to avoid relegation, those who have a chance to get into Europe, etc. If there is a game with nothing at stake, choose another time so as not to coincide with the really relevant duels that weekend.
This is not the first time that LaLiga would help clubs earn extraordinary income from their stadium. This is what they have done with Atlético de Madrid and the Rolling Stones or Guns’n Roses concerts at the Metropolitano, for example, and they also did this with Athletic, when San Mamés hosted the Rugby Champions final in 2018.
The trend is, whenever possible, to maximize the ability of all clubs to commercially exploit their stadiums as much as possible. Even between two institutions as directly opposed as Real Madrid and LaLiga.
