The Harry Potter universe will have a new opportunity to enchant new generations and “win back” its loyal fans after the disappointing failure of the “Fantastic Beast” trilogy.
According to the general director of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, the studio responsible for the film saga, the Harry Potter fantasy novels will be adapted to television format through the streaming platform Max, belonging to Warner.
Although information is scarce so far, Zaslav himself revealed that the new adaptation will be released in 2026 and will have the author of the original novels, JK Rowling, as executive producer.
Both parties are delighted to get this franchise back on track. Our conversations were great and we couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead.”
What will the Harry Potter series be about?
It should be remembered that since April 2023, Warner Bros. announced that the Harry Potter universe would have a television adaptation, planned for a decade, with one season for each Rowling book.
Likewise, it had been revealed that this adaptation would be a reboot of the franchise that flooded movie theaters from 2001 to 2011 and launched actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Ruper Grint, among others, to stardom.
Despite the recent announcement, the names of the new actors were not revealed. Likewise, there was no mention of a possible start date or other details in the production such as its showrunner.
Harry Potter will try to forget Fantastic Beast
It should be remembered that after the Harry Potter saga left a “vacuum” among its fans and followers, Warner Bros. tried to avoid the “magical cooling” by launching the “Fantastic Beast” trilogy under the direction of Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne. like the wizard Newt Scamander.
The events narrated in the saga, prior to what was seen in the Harry Potter films, were received enthusiastically at the beginning thanks to “Fantastic Beast And Where To Find Them”, which was directed by the person in charge of closing the universe of Harry Potter, David Yates. Despite the criticism and accusations against it, the film achieved good box office, leading to the production of a second part.
“Fantastic Beast: The Crimes of Grindelwald” was received in a more “lukewarm” manner, managing to cover the film’s budget as well as the promotional budget. However, the departure of Johnny Depp as the antagonist of the film, due to his viral trial with Amber Heard, Rowling’s “anti-trans” statements, as well as the diversity of criticism about the weakness of its plot, ended up “burying” to the saga.
Finally, “Fantastic Beast: The Secrets of Dumbledore” certified what most imagined: the death of the saga. Its disappointing box office, the delay it suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the immensity of accusations and criticism put an end to Warner Bros.’ attempt to continue “squeezing” the magical world of JK Rowling.
