For a few years now, the Italian soccer team is no longer considered a great power as it used to be, mainly because it was left out of the last two World Cups (Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022) and was eliminated in the group stage of the previous two. (Brazil 2014 and South Africa 2010), but coach Luciano Spalletti could be the “messiah” that the European team needed so much.
Looking ahead to the next Euro Cup, Spalletti offered an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport, where he revealed his intentions at the helm of the four-time world champion team.
“T-shirts, values, pride, responsibility, these are not words I use randomly, although someone must have thought of that. Some players thought that Spalletti barks and then has no teeth, but they are wrong and it must be made clear. From now on you will leave the PlayStation at home, I am going to invent a game for you to think about to distract you during the night. They call me and I give them their homework, if the day’s homework wasn’t enough. “At the Nazionale we are focused, we are not joking,” the strategist defiantly launched in the interview with the Italian media.
The Euro Cup, which will be held from June 14 to July 14 in Germany, is the new great objective for “La Azzurra”, a team that will be part of Group B along with Spain, Croatia and Albania. In order to not only compete, but transcend the competition, Spaletti is clear that the focus of his players must be solely on football.
“I can handle cell phones, but not during massages and treatments. I talked about video games because there were things that I didn’t like, and I asked him to write the ‘no’ in capital letters. I want the concentrations from before, with old customs and atmosphere. Simple things, Buffon will help me with that (the former goalkeeper is the head of the delegation). If modernity is playing Play until 4 in the morning with the game the next day, then it doesn’t work. Kids today prefer to post a photo on Instagram with their hair done before putting their heads down and working. “These are not the values that my Italy should transmit,” the coach remarked.
“You come to the Nazionale to win the Euro Cup, not to win in Call of Duty,” said Spaletti.
“I want to win the European Championship and win the World Cup. Then we can be eliminated immediately, but the speech must be that, the one that all Italians expect. We are going to Germany to win, not to participate. Our history asks us to do so. We can be on par with England, France, Spain and Germany, but with players who do well for 90 minutes, not just 20,” the strategist noted.
Italy will use the next FIFA Date to play two friendly matches in preparation for the Euro. On March 21, at the Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, they will face Venezuela, while on the 24th of the same month, but at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, they will clash against Ecuador.
