The attacker was last seen wearing a black jacket as he fled the scene on foot toward Glenwood Road, according to the NYPD. The victim was taken by ambulance to Brookdale University Medical Hospital, where she was in stable condition.

It was not immediately clear if the church building was open to the public at the time of the attack. There are construction fences around it and the church’s website says it will be “Opening Soon.” The religious institution has not commented on what happened yesterday.

At the scene, locals said the church building has been under renovation for years and was believed to be closed to the public at the time of the stabbing.

In New York City, the number of stabbings and cuts continues to rise. There were 4,493 cases in 2023 until early December, an increase of 6% compared to the same period in 2022. In parallel, arrests for knife crimes have increased almost 30%.

The figures do not surprise experts because knives are easier and cheaper to obtain than a gun. However, they represent a more brutal attack because they involve more physical approach to the victim.

A previous NYPD report warned last August that fatal stabbings had risen 29% that year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.

Several people were arrested Thursday after a 17-year-old Hispanic boy was stabbed during an apparent group dispute in Times Square, New York’s tourist and theater mecca.

Earlier this month Laurence “Larry” Hopkins, a bouncer at a Brooklyn nightclub, was fatally stabbed in the neck and chest while trying to break up a fight and was indifferently left to bleed to death by dozens of patrons present, according to police. from New York.

Also this month, a Mexican gang member was stabbed to death by a rival in a bar near his home in the Bronx.
