The Venezuelan prospect of the New York Mets, Luisangel Acuña, demonstrated this Monday that he is more than prepared to debut in the Major Leagues after an impressive performance he recorded in his first start with the metropolitan organization after the match they played against the Nationals. Washington as part of spring training and with which he hopes to gain the trust of manager Carlos Mendoza to be able to turn the organization around and thus support them in the future.
In the aforementioned game, the Venezuelan started as the starter at second base alongside the star Francisco Lindor at shortstop, who has become a mentor for the younger brother of MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. to support him in his professional growth and thus be able to create one of the most dangerous keys in organized baseball.
During a recent interview conducted by Acuña for SNY, the Venezuelan was quite grateful for the receptivity he has received from Lindor and for all the advice he has given him during spring training after his arrival to the Mets; He also stressed that he wants to continue working to be able to have the best possible performance this season and show that he is ready for the Major Leagues.
“I’ve been talking to Lindor for a couple of days. He was talking to me about him being on the straight and that’s what I did today. I executed today,” said Luisangel Acuña, who finished the match 5-2 in the victory that the New Yorkers achieved against the Washington Nationals as part of the work they have been doing to improve the results of the 2023 season in which they failed to advance to the postseason due to the large number of defeats they suffered.
It is important to remember that the infielder was acquired by the Mets in the trade that the organization made with the Rangers for Max Scherzer at the deadline last season; His interest was reflected because in his four seasons in the minor leagues he has established himself as one of the most important prospects in all of organized baseball, according to MiLB.com.
“I’m happy to play with Lindor in the middle and he is giving good advice. I am happy to be able to learn a lot from him. As a young player you want to do things quickly, but it’s about making adjustments. Talking to Lindor and being reminded to slow down the game, that’s what I’m trying to do. I feel comfortable at second base. I know that I played most of my career as a shortstop but I feel very, very comfortable at second base,” Acuña said in his statement.
For his part, the Mets manager, Carlos Mendoza, recognized the work that this duo has done, with whom he hopes to be able to count on at some point this season to provide complete security to the internal area of the diamond; He also highlighted that this type of advice “coming from a guy like Lindor is important.”
“Communication between pitches… conversations between innings… having him around you is important. Coming from a guy like Lindor it is important,” emphasized the Venezuelan strategist who seeks to give a new face to New Yorkers.
