Boxing legend Mike Tyson gave his opinion this Tuesday about the future in boxing of Mexican boxer Canelo Álvarez and forcefully assured that it is a “shame” that he has declined a million-dollar offer to face David Benavídez on May 4 in Las Vegas.

Tyson cited sources who assumed that Canelo Álvarez would receive more than $60 million dollars for the fight against Benavídez but that he rejected it due to his refusal to fight Mexicans, as he has stated publicly on several occasions.

For that reason, the former Heavyweight wondered if Tapatío was afraid of losing to someone who is clearly younger and stronger, according to his analysis.

“I can’t believe what I just heard. Canelo rejected 60 million dollars to fight Benavidez, who is a tremendous fighter, young, strong, hungry and with Mexican pride. What’s wrong with Canelo? Is he afraid of losing? Doesn’t he want to give the fans the fight they want to see? Don’t you respect the legacy of the great Mexican champions who faced the best regardless of money? “This is a shame for boxing and for Mexico,” commented the world champion.

Later, Tyson recalled having shared and met many Mexicans who never rejected any fight, ensuring that he is damaging his name and reputation.

“I have met many Mexican fighters throughout my life and they have all been brave warriors who have never shied away from anyone. Canelo is not up to par with them. He is tarnishing her name and his reputation. If I were him, I would take the fight with Benavidez and show the world that he is the best. But it seems he doesn’t have the courage or honor to do so. It’s a shame, because he has a lot of talent, but he lacks heart,” he added.

Although Tyson was aggressive with his statements on other occasions, he has expressed his affection for Canelo Álvarez, but he has always confirmed his opinion that he would not beat Benavídez.

In fact, in May 2023, after Canelo Álvarez’s victory against John Ryder, Tyson said that he had to face Benavídez and that if he did so he would be remembered as one of the best even if he lost.

“Canelo, out of pride and his legacy, should face David Benavidez. Even if he lost he would be more recognized, he would never be labeled as being a coward and avoiding the best. Years will pass and in each interview you will be reminded why you avoided Benavidez,” he commented on that occasion.

To date, Canelo Álvarez has confirmed his fight for next May 4, 2024 in Las Vegas, but it is unknown who his rival will be.

Rumors have pointed to Jaime Munguía, Jermall Charlo and even Benavídez himself, but without any confirmation from the Canelo Team.
