Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, officially announced her candidacy for co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). The announcement comes after Ronna McDaniel made public that she will present her resignation from the RNC presidency on March 8, after the former president asked her to leave.

Lara wrote to committee members Wednesday, saying she is “proud to have the endorsement of my father-in-law and 45th president, Donald J. Trump, for this position and to understand the fundamental importance of this role.”

He added: “In the coming days, I look forward to connecting with you, the members of the RNC, and hopefully earning your vote.”

In addition to his daughter-in-law, Trump has announced his endorsement of North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley to replace McDaniel; and his current senior advisor, Chris LaCivita, to become chief operating officer.

Every dollar for Trump

In a preview of what would be her eventual management as co-chair of the RNC, Lara stated last week that every cent of the Committee’s dollar would go towards Trump’s already more than likely presidential candidacy.

“We need to make sure that every penny of every dollar donated to the Republican National Committee goes to Donald Trump’s campaign, make sure that we expand our leadership in the House with the America First patriots who love this country, that we take back the Senate on November 5 of this year,” he said in a speech in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Separately, Lara avoided answering whether RNC money would be used to cover Trump’s legal costs, saying he believes the bills “have already been covered at this point” by the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

“I don’t really know what their position is on this. Obviously, I’m not officially with the RNC. So I would have to get back to you,” Trump’s daughter-in-law told reporters.

McDaniel exits

McDaniel had been hand-picked by Trump in 2016, shortly after his election victory, and has maintained a close relationship with him since then.

“It has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve the Republican National Committee for seven years as chair to elect Republicans and grow our party,” McDaniel said in a statement.

He added: “I have decided to step aside at our spring training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a president of his choice. “Historically, the RNC has undergone changes once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”
