In Langley Park, Maryland, the community has been shaken by a tragic event that has shocked everyone. The Prince George’s County Police Department announced Tuesday night the arrest of an illegal Salvadoran immigrant in connection with the murder of Jeremy Poou Caceres, a 2-year-old boy.

Nilson Trejo-Granados, 25, is now the fifth suspect arrested for this horrific crime, and faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, as reported by Fox News Digital.

Trejo-Granados, according to the Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), is a Salvadoran citizen illegally present in the United States. This arrest has reignited the debate about illegal immigration and its consequences on public safety.

The history of Trejo-Granados in the United States is marked by turbulent episodes. In November 2022, a Department of Justice immigration judge in Newark, New Jersey, ordered his removal from the country. However, in March 2023, Trejo-Granados was arrested by the Montgomery County Police Department for robbery.

Criticism for the releases

Even though ICE issued an immigration detainer, local authorities released him, sparking criticism and concern about cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

The terrible event that ended the life of Jeremy Poou Caceres occurred on February 8, when a detective heard gunshots and found the boy and his mother wounded by gunshots, Fox News Digital reported.

The boy was pronounced dead shortly after at a hospital, while his mother survived her injuries. Police determined that the victims were not the intended targets of the shooting, but rather were caught in the middle of a confrontation between two groups of men in the area.

In addition to Trejo-Granados, four other suspects have been arrested in connection with this case, including two teenagers charged as adults. The police continue to investigate this tragic event to clarify all the details and bring those responsible to justice.
