Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, appeared behind closed doors and under oath on Wednesday before the House committees investigating his father’s impeachment, where he denied having involved his father in his affairs.
House Republicans accused the president of pressuring Ukrainian authorities to fire a prosecutor investigating a gas company where the president’s son worked, and of benefiting financially from trade deals with Chinese companies. Given this, the investigative committee tries to find some evidence to link the president to these businesses.
Hunter, in response to the allegations, strongly denied any wrongdoing, stating that he never involved his father in his professional affairs. He also called the impeachment inquiry a “political farce” and a “witch hunt” orchestrated by Republicans to damage the president’s image and his agenda.
“I am proud of my father and his service to this country. I never did anything to put his integrity or his reputation at risk. “I have nothing to hide or be ashamed of,” Hunter declared after leaving the Capitol.
Republicans announced that they will continue their investigation. Rep. James Comer, Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said there were some “discrepancies” between what Hunter said and what other witnesses said in previous depositions, although he did not specify which ones.
For his part, Rep. Dan Goldman, D-New York, told reporters that Hunter Biden answered all questions honestly and transparently, and that there was no evidence implicating President Biden in any wrongdoing.
“The Republicans have failed in their attempt to manufacture a scandal where there is none. They have wasted taxpayers’ time and money on a baseless and meaningless investigation. It is time for them to stop persecuting the president and dedicate themselves to working for the good of the country,” Goldman said.
A full transcript of Hunter Biden’s statement could be made public in the coming days. Sources familiar with the testimony said the president’s son was willing to confront all of the Republicans’ accusations, without once availing himself of his Fifth Amendment right not to testify against himself.
