A man of Honduran origin, identified as Ángel Matías Castellanos-Orellana, 19, has been arrested in Louisiana after being accused of committing serious crimes in the community. According to police reports, Castellanos-Orellana faces charges of raping a 14-year-old girl and repeatedly stabbing another individual during a robbery.
Castellanos-Orellana’s arrest took place after he was released after facing accusations of raping the minor, according to Fox News Digital.
However, last Sunday, authorities arrested him again after he allegedly accosted a man demanding his belongings and stabbed him multiple times in the face and back.
Local authorities have filed a series of charges against Castellanos-Orellana, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, first-degree rape and aggravated assault. Additionally, a federal detainer has been issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) against him.
Concern about dealing with undocumented immigrants
Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley has expressed concern about the challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with undocumented individuals in criminal situations. Conley has highlighted the difficulty posed by the lack of documented identification and the possibility that these individuals use aliases, which makes them difficult to identify and track.
Additionally, Conley has mentioned that lack of access to reliable data and language barriers also complicate police investigations, putting local authorities at a considerable disadvantage, Fox News Digital reported.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, regretting the impact caused by this undocumented individual. Landry has emphasized the need to strengthen border security measures to prevent the entry of people who pose a risk to the community.
Given this situation, local authorities have called for citizen collaboration to obtain additional information about Castellanos-Orellana and any other identity he may be using, in order to guarantee the safety of the community and prevent future incidents.
Recent cases
The news comes at a particularly delicate time for the Hispanic community in the United States, after several similar crimes allegedly at the hands of Hispanics were known in recent weeks, unleashing anti-immigrant comments.
This Thursday, for example, it was learned that an undocumented Salvadoran immigrant was arrested in connection with the murder of a young child in Langley Park, Maryland, earlier this month.
And an irregular immigrant of Venezuelan origin was blamed for the murder of a nursing student at the University of Georgia.
