The Russian tennis player, Andrey Rublev, was expelled by the authorities from the ATP 500 in Dubai after a scandalous situation against a line judge.
The duel against Alexander Bublik ended after Rublev insulted the linesman after a controversial ruling.
Immediately after the point was declared in favor of the Kazakh, Rublev went to the lineman’s position and shouted in his face. According to the specialized media Punto de Break, the tournament supervisor came to warn that a line judge, who knew how to speak Russian, identified that Rublev shouted at him in his language, “fucking idiot.”
This led the highest authority to address the Muscovite’s position to ask for explanations about his alleged obscene language. The fifth best tennis player today denied to the supervisor that he had said any out of character words and even stated that he initially spoke in English. It didn’t help: he was expelled from the tournament. Bublik was willing to continue, although the decision had already been made.
Consequently, the second seed, champion in Hong Kong at the beginning of the season, will drop one place in the ranking, as a result of not being able to successfully defend the final reached in 2023, giving up his place to the German Alexander Zverev (6th), while He will also not enjoy the prize money, corresponding to $157,755 dollars for placing among the best four.
It remains to be seen whether Rublev will receive another disciplinary sanction, although it should be noted that he could quickly regain his position if he registers an important performance at the Indian Wells Masters 1000, where he succumbed in the round of 16 last year.
Rublev was pursuing the goal of obtaining glory in Dubai, which he had achieved in 2022 when he won the final against the Czech Jiro Vesely in two sets. In addition, he intended to get rid of the thorn in the last defining match that he lost last year with his compatriot Daniil Medvedev (also in two sets).
