Derek Rosa, accused of stabbing his mother to death in Florida, looks calm while talking to the 911 dispatcher about the crime, as seen in a video that was recently released by authorities.
A security camera at the entrance to the family apartment at 211 W. 79th Place in Hialeah captured the minor, phone in hand, alerting 911 to the situation.
The recording was released by local media in early February.
The video shows the 13-year-old boy shortly after the attack on the woman at the apartment door as police officers approach.
Rosa, who is connected to the 911 call, asks the dispatcher if she should leave the unit.
“I see officers, am I leaving, am I leaving the house?” asks the suspect.
“No, don’t go, don’t go,” the 911 employee orders.
The teenager seems calm under the circumstances; He doesn’t look desperate or crying.
The content contrasts with that corresponding to the audio of the 911 call that was disclosed as part of the first reports of the case.
In that exchange, which includes Rosa’s confession of the crime, he is heard crying; and at that point he seems to scream when he is scared by something that supposedly fell to the floor.
Camera captured brief exchange with his mother before the murder
In another video released along with the 911 call, Rosa is seen with her mother Irina García in a brief exchange hours before the murder.
In the recording, Rosa opens the apartment door while García sits in a chair nursing her newborn daughter.
Rosa asks her mother in Spanish why she is always telling her not to run.
The brief exchange passes peacefully.
Dayliset Rielo, a member of the legal team representing Rosa, considered that the recent videos released by the authorities showing her client before and after the murder are inconclusive.
“I think those recordings, along with everything else that has been released, demonstrate that the defense is entitled and needs to have the entirety of the evidence, not cherry-picked bits and pieces,” he told NBC 6.
Although Rosa’s trial was supposed to begin last month, the date has not yet been determined.
This is due in part to the fact that, supposedly, the prosecution has not provided the defense with all the evidence they have.
Rosa faces first-degree murder charges for stabbing Garcia at least 40 times with a kitchen knife and slitting his throat.
The events were reported on October 12, around 11:30 pm. At the scene, apart from Rosa and García, was the young man’s newborn half-sister. The baby was not hurt.
Although the boy has admitted responsibility for the events at least twice, authorities have not established a motive.
