American basketball player Dwight Howard will join the Guaynabo Mets for the 2024 season of Baloncesto Superior Nacional, the main sports league in Puerto Rico.
The club confirmed the news on its Facebook page, sharing several photos of Howard arriving on the island. In the images, Howard is wearing a coat with the number 42 on the left shoulder, white pants, and dreadlocks on his head.
“PR BOUND” (On Puerto Rican soil), highlighted the Guaynabo team along with the images of Howard, who has been selected to the All-Star Game eight times and chosen NBA Defensive Player of the Year three times,
Howard has played in the NBA for 18 seasons, representing the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards and the Philadelphia 76ers. His last season in the NBA was in 2021-22 with the Lakers.
Other players who will join the Mets are former NBA players Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Renaldo Balkman, who will be under the command of coach and former Puerto Rican basketball player José Juan Barea.
Hollins-Jefferson played six seasons in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and Portland Trail Blazers. He has also played internationally in Türkiye and the Philippines.
Balkman, for his part, played seven seasons in the NBA with the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets.
The Mets will begin the season on April 3 hosting the Manatí Bears at the Mario ‘Quijote’ Morales Coliseum.
