Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made controversial remarks during the Antalya Forum in Turkey on Friday, suggesting that Donald Trump’s return to power in the United States could be the key to ending the war in Ukraine.

“If Trump had been the president of the United States at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we would not be seeing this war now,” Orbán said during the event, quoted by the EFE news agency.

The Hungarian leader expressed his belief that the only real chance to stop the conflict in Ukraine is if Trump returns to power and works for peace. “It’s my only hope. Without it, the war between Ukraine and Russia will be prolonged and will create dilemmas for European politics,” he warned.

Orbán confirmed that he plans to meet with Trump next week in Florida, where he will discuss the situation in Ukraine and how to end the conflict if the Republican wins the elections in November.

Orbán clarified that it is not his intention to ask for votes for any candidate, but from his Hungarian perspective and for the sake of peace, he considers Trump’s return to power desirable.

He also highlighted that the United States plays a crucial role in resolving conflicts, such as in the Middle East, stating that “without the United States it is impossible to make peace in the region.”

The Hungarian leader spoke about his vision for the European Union: he expressed his intention to work for stronger representation of the right and conservative values on the continent, while reiterating his firm opposition to immigration.

Furthermore, he praised Turkey for its role in managing the migration crisis, which he described as a “bad” phenomenon associated with crime and chaos.
