Edwin Díaz, in charge of closing the games at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, could be very close to making his long-awaited return for the 2024 Major League season as he improves from his ruptured patellar tendon injury.
As part of his recovery plan, which has extended for more than a year, Díaz has continued working to strengthen his arm in this Spring Training but his official return is getting closer and closer after this week he carried out multiple confrontation sessions to rivals.
Despite this, the Metro closer to date has not participated in any Spring Training 2024 match, but that could change in the coming hours.
According to the calendar of the Mets’ medical staff, this Tuesday Díaz will take the mound during a minor league training camp meeting, where he hopes to begin getting in shape to regain his level.
After the presentation, Díaz is expected to join the New York Mets roster for Grapefruit League matches, establishing himself as the savior of the currency before making his debut on Opening Day on March 28.
Díaz is currently in the final phase of his recovery from the rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee that he suffered during the celebration of Puerto Rico’s victory against the Dominican Republic in the last 2023 World Baseball Classic.
The injury became a headache for the Mets last season after investing $102 million dollars in the Puerto Rican to make him the highest-paid closer in Major League history, signing for five seasons.
The contract was acquired after an impressive 2022 where he finished with an ERA of 1.31 and 32 games saved.
