The city of Monument, Colorado, reaffirmed its position as a non-sanctuary city, and stated that it will not accept any more undocumented migrants.

Mayor Mitch LaKind explained that the decision, in a unanimous 7-0 vote on the City Council, was made to prevent the mass arrival of immigrants from nearby Denver, and expressed concerns about the fiscal impact and the lack of resources to support a sanctuary city policy, published Fox News.

“The goal is to ensure that Denver knows that we will not accept busloads of immigrants into our community. The main reason is that we do not have a budget that matches theirs, and we will not use taxpayer funds to support what they have decided to take on as a self-proclaimed sanctuary city,” the mayor told the news network.

The resolution, written in part in response to the arrival of immigrants in Colorado Springs, has generated controversy. Meanwhile, Denver is grappling with the fallout from its sanctuary city status, with Mayor Mike Johnston warning of a potential fiscal and humanitarian crisis.

LaKind emphasized that Monument does not have the capacity to house immigrants and that it will work with federal agencies to address the situation. Additionally, he urged Joe Biden’s administration to take steps to close the border and increase deportation efforts, arguing that it is time to reverse his policies.

“The president has the power to do that. “He has had the power all along, but he has decided not to do it,” he criticized.

Immigrant families are limited in how long they are allowed to stay in Denver shelters: 42 days instead of the 37 days previously allowed, according to The Denver Post. The deadline for individuals is 14 days.

On the other hand, if immigrants arrive in Monument after the resolution is approved not to be a sanctuary city, Mayor Mitch LaKind warned that the city administration and the police force will collaborate with federal agencies to pick them up and take them to places where they can be detained as necessary.
