An elderly married couple died when an early morning fire tore through an apartment complex in Passaic, New Jersey, on Sunday.

“Shortly after 9 a.m., first responders received a report of a fire on Spruce Street in the city of Passaic. Unfortunately, two elderly people, a couple, a man and a woman over 70 years old, lost their lives,” reported Mayor Héctor Lora. Prosecutors later identified the couple as Fred and Yvonne Edwards.

The Passaic Fire Department found flames billowing from inside the windows of the couple’s apartment, rising to the ceiling. The prosecutor’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
