The remembered Mexican boxer and current promoter, Óscar de la Hoya, decided to talk about the situation that Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is currently facing in which he has not found a rival that he can face next May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in The Vegas, Nevada; Apparently the man from Guadalajara is in the middle of a negotiation to be able to face Jermall Charlo and Jaime Munguía, although without any success on the part of both boxers’ teams.
One of the main contenders to be able to face the current undisputed super middleweight champion is the Mexican boxer David Benavídez, who has worked hard to be able to face the Colorado without receiving a negative proposal from his team without any sensible explanation for said rejection.
In exclusive statements offered to El Diario de Nueva York, Óscar de la Hoya stated that he does not understand the reason why Canelo Álvarez has rejected on so many occasions the possibility of being able to face the ‘Mexican Monster’ considering that he still has the physical qualities to be able to defeat him and not wait until he is older and clearly surpassed by his Aztec rival.
“People are throwing it at Canelo, I don’t know the reason why Canelo doesn’t want to fight Benavídez. I don’t understand it because I would fight him instantly if he was active; The more time passes, the better Benavídez is as a fighter and obviously Canelo is going down because he is not at his peak, so I don’t understand what the reason is,” De la Hoya expressed in his statements.
“A war, both are coming towards the front and it would be a war, that is why he has always asked for it; A fight between Mexicans has not happened in years, since Erick Morales and Barrera, imagine,” concluded the director of The Golden Boy Promotions to La Opinión.
Let us remember that the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán, stated that David Benavídez became the mandatory rival to fight for the belt currently held by Canelo Álvarez and that said distinction could even be withdrawn in the event of not accept the fight before next September.
“I was talking to Luis de Cubas and Mauricio Sulaimán told him that they are going to see if Canelo wants to fight me in September, and if not, they are going to take away his belt. We’ll see, but I’m not going to put my career on pause because someone else doesn’t want to fight me,” Benavídez expressed on this topic in an interview for Tha Boxing Voice.
