In a phenomenon known as ‘the Great Quit’, the United States has seen more than 34 million people voluntarily quit their jobs during 2023, with a sharp peak of 3.7 million in September of that year alone.
Below, we share the labor sectors where there are more workers resigning.
1. Hospitality
With a resignation rate roughly double the national average, standing at 4.3%, the hospitality sector faces particular challenges, including long working hours over weekends and holidays.
Despite an average wage of $21.36 per hour, the attractiveness of staying in the sector is increasingly decreasing.
2. Teachers
Educators are leaving the profession burdened by low pay and mental health issues, with more than 40% indicating that their psychological well-being negatively affects their work.
3. Nursing
This field is experiencing a critical staffing shortage, with about 18% of nurses leaving the profession in their first year.
The need for more than one million nurses is projected by 2030.
4.Retail
Despite being a large sector with more than four million jobs, retail workers face low salaries, averaging $30,000 annually, which is insufficient for many families.
5. Manufacturing
Four million manufacturing jobs are expected to be available by 2030, but by the end of 2023, the sector saw a significant drop of 35,000 jobs.
6. Warehouse workers
The harsh reality of working in warehouses and increasing automation are limiting opportunities for human workers.
7. Food workers
With an average wage of $13.52 per hour and a high turnover rate, the food industry struggles to retain its staff.
8. Truck drivers
Despite a half-decent salary, stress leads to a high turnover rate, with a projection of 162,000 vacancies by 2030.
9. Technology employees
Although approximately 377,500 new jobs are expected per year, more than 30% of tech workers consider changing jobs in the next 12 months.
10. Accountants
With a median annual salary of $77,000 and a projection of 126,500 job openings per year through 2032, accounting sees a continued outflow of professionals.
