Cristiano Ronaldo’s second cycle at Manchester United is possibly one of the worst chapters in the Portuguese’s career, but there is also someone else who regrets having been a participant in this moment, the former coach of the ‘Red Devils’, Ole -Gunnar Solskjaer.
And the Norwegian coach acknowledged in an interview given to the portal ‘The Overlap’, that having been one of the main architects of the signing of ‘CR7’ for United in 2021, was one of the mistakes he made while he was directing the team .
“I’ve thought about it a lot, obviously. The right thing was to sign Cristiano, but I think it would have been better for him and for us if he had not signed. That is the headline,” Solskjaer said, knowing that his words could have repercussions.
But this was not the only time that the 51-year-old coach has addressed the topic of Cristiano Ronaldo, and in another participation in the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, he revealed that the Portuguese striker himself proposed a plan to give him the minutes of play he wanted, but this did not turn out as they expected.
“When I arrived, he told me to start him three games in a row and put him as a substitute in the fourth. But he is so passionate that, when I did it, he didn’t like it,” he explained about the player who scored 24 goals and distributed three assists in 38 games in which he directed him.
However, the technical director also spoke about how the arrival of the Portuguese star affected the style of play that Manchester United had been developing, which had to change to cover its defensive deficiencies.
“When the team had the ball there was no problem. Without him in the pressure, we had to change the roles we were used to a little. We were one of the teams with the greatest pressure before his arrival,” he argued.
Meanwhile, he explained the reason why both he and the club made great efforts to sign the forward from Juventus. “We wanted that passion that he transmits, but it had its complications. It didn’t turn out well for me, nor for him, but it was the right decision.”
Finally, Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that one of the people who suffered the most with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo was the Uruguayan Edinson Cavani since he was sent to the bench so that the Portuguese could have playing time. “He is the one who suffered the most. We played and made Edison understand a football model and then he changed.”
