USA, Like many other nations, it continues to face challenges in the pursuit of gender equality in all areas of society. From access to economic opportunities to political representation and access to health care, women in different parts of the country experience varying conditions that influence their quality of life and well-being.
A recent study by WalletHub sheds light on conditions for women in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The analysis was based on 25 key indicators covering economic, security, health and political participation aspects. These indicators ranged from the average income of female workers to the female homicide rate and political representation.

These states stand out for offering favorable conditions in key areas such as economy, health, security and political participation for women who reside in them. From low unemployment rates to high median incomes and strong political representation, they provide an enabling environment for women’s growth and well-being.
The results reveal a diverse and complex picture, with significant differences between states in terms of conditions for women. Massachusetts emerges as the leading state for women’s well-being in 2024, closely followed by the District of Columbia and Minnesota.
In Massachusetts, women enjoy equal economic conditions and strong health care. The state has a low female unemployment rate of 2.8% and high quality of health care, contributing to its top position in the overall ranking.
On the other hand, the District of Columbia stands out for its higher median income for women, as well as strong political participation. With a diverse population and thriving economy, the District of Columbia offers opportunities for growth and prosperity for its women residents.
Minnesota, for its part, offers excellent economic opportunities for women, with high median incomes and low unemployment rates. Additionally, the state has one of the highest high school graduation rates for women and high female voter turnout.
However, the study also reveals significant disparities between states, with some facing significant challenges in terms of gender equality. For example, Louisiana and Oklahoma rank last overall, with significantly lower scores on all indicators analyzed.
In terms of median earnings of female workers adjusted for cost of living, the District of Columbia leads the list, closely followed by Minnesota and Virginia. On the other hand, California and Hawaii have the lowest median earnings for working women, reflecting economic disparities that persist in different parts of the country.
The unemployment rate for women also varies considerably among states, with South Dakota recording the lowest rate and the District of Columbia recording the highest rate. These differences underscore the importance of addressing the economic and employment inequalities that women face in different parts of the country.
