Eddy Herrera has something to confess to his followers. The famous merenguero is already a little tired of performing “El Jardinero”, the song that made him famous with Wilfrido Vargas, back in 1995, and which is part of Latin American musical memory.
“That song is going to be 40 years old next year, and if you ask me how many times I have sung it, I would say every time and a lot more. I know that tongue twister by heart and it comes out as if I were going to drink a glass of water, but yes, it makes me a little tired of singing it,” Herrera reveals. “But the truth is that when I start ‘and how dare you say to me…’, that goes away, and I go crazy, I transform.”
On the other hand, a song that never seems to tire him is another of his greatest hits: “Pégame tu vice.”
“That topic surrounds me, it makes me sick. I don’t know what that song has, maybe the word ‘mommy’, combined with sex appeal, with the story ‘hit me with your blessed vice’. I love it,” she said with a laugh.
But for the peace of mind of his New York audience, both songs will be part of the repertoire that Herrera has prepared as part of his show “Agradecido”, which after premiering in the Dominican Republic last year, he will bring to the stage of the Lehman Center in the Bronx, this Saturday March 9.
The show is a celebration of the almost 35-year career of the so-called “Gigante del Merengue”, who after being part of the orchestra of his musical father, Wilfrido Vargas, developed as a soloist, achieving success with songs such as “Carolina, Carolina ”, “You are a stranger”, and “Let’s sleep together”, to name a few.
“We chose that name (Grateful) because I love giving thanks, I love the word generosity, and it surrounds me in everything I do as a person and also as an artist,” says the merenguero.
And what is Eddy Herrera grateful for? We asked him.
“I am grateful for life, for God, for my family, but above all for those Latin American people at a global level, made up of 17 countries that I visit every year. I am grateful for so much applause, for giving an average of 110 concerts a year. How can I not be grateful,” he says.
luxury guests
Herrera returns to New York, a city he had not visited since 2017, to perform for the first time at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, accompanied by some very special guests.
“I’m looking forward to Saturday, because the show is ready. It is a show full of hits from my career of almost 35 years and has an additional bonus, I will sing with my father Wilfrido Vargas, my guest, the Diva Miriam Cruz, and El Canario, one of the greatest soneros,” he explains. “There is going to be a beautiful, fraternal interaction, filled with merengue harmony and with a little sauce. “I’m sure it’s going to be a magical night.”
It is the first time that Herrera presents “Agradecido” outside his native country, where in September of last year, at the Gran Teatro del Cibao, it broke sales records and managed to be nominated for the Soberano Awards, as Best Show of the Year.
This presentation also served to create his next album, which will be called “Eddy Herrera: Agradecido Live” and will be released in mid-April, as well as a special for YouTube, recorded with six 4K cameras on 32 channels.
Herrera released his album “Imparable” last year, from which he is currently promoting the single “ Quiero Más ”, before presenting his album live.
