The president of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaimán, also wanted to comment on the long-awaited fight between Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez vs David Benavidez.
Recently Benavidez commented in an interview that he had had conversations with the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán, in which the possibility of taking his scepter from the organization from Canelo was considered if he continued to refuse to fight with Benavidez.
“I was talking to Luis de Cubas and Mauricio Sulaimán told him that they are going to see if Canelo wants to fight me in September, and if not, they are going to take away his belt,” David Benavidez mentioned in an interview with The Boxing Voice.
But Sulaimán came out against these statements and denied the ‘Mexican Monster’, saying that ‘it is unthinkable’ to do what Benavidez suggests since, indeed, Canelo will defend his title on May 4 in Las Vegas, regardless of his rival. .
“Canelo fights on May 4, Benavidez fights on June 15… how are we going to talk about anything other than that? “We are going to let the two fight, then Benavidez is going to decide which division he stays in and before that there is nothing to talk about, everything else is speculation and the desire to create controversy where there is none,” said Sulaimán.
With 19 world titles, ‘Canelo’ became the first Mexican to be undisputed world champion by winning all the belts of the four international boxing organizations, unifying the titles of the super middleweight division of the WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF. , by beating the British Billy Joe Saunders in 2021.
Óscar de la Hoya does not understand Canelo
Óscar de la Hoya decided to talk about the situation that Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is currently facing in which he has not found a rival that he can face next May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In exclusive statements offered to El Diario de Nueva York, Óscar de la Hoya stated that he does not understand the reason why Canelo Álvarez has rejected on so many occasions the possibility of being able to face the ‘Mexican Monster’ considering that he still has the physical qualities to be able to defeat him and not wait until he is older and clearly surpassed by his Aztec rival.
“People are throwing it at Canelo, I don’t know the reason why Canelo doesn’t want to fight Benavídez. I don’t understand it because I would fight him instantly if he was active; The more time passes, the better Benavídez is as a fighter and obviously Canelo is going down because he is not at his peak, so I don’t understand what the reason is,” De la Hoya expressed in his statements.
“A war, both are coming towards the front and it would be a war, that is why he has always asked for it; A fight between Mexicans has not happened in years, since Erick Morales and Barrera, imagine,” concluded the director of The Golden Boy Promotions.
