A teenager was fatally hit by a train late yesterday afternoon in Brooklyn, capping a dramatic streak of four passengers killed in less than 22 hours on the New York City Subway.
The latest incident occurred near the F/G/R 4th Avenue-9th Street station in Park Slope around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the FDNY.
The 16-year-old girl was walking on the tracks and was hit by a train, according to the NYPD. She was pronounced dead at the scene, he reported. Pix11. His name was not released.
Hours earlier, around 2 pm another person was hit by a train in Brooklyn at the Beverley Road station on the Q line in Flatbush. The incident did not appear to have been criminal in nature, according to the NYPD.
Earlier in the morning, another victim was fatally struck by a train at the 42nd Street-Bryant Park/Fifth Avenue station in Midtown Manhattan at 9:53 a.m.
Although yesterday’s three cases appear to have been unprovoked, shortly before 7 pm on Monday a man was fatally pushed onto the tracks at the 125th Street and Lexington Avenue station on the 4/5/6 lines. That crime happened just a few hours and blocks from where the New York City Police Department had announced a new operation aimed at improving security within the Subway system.
Victim Jason Volz (53) was pronounced dead at the scene. 24-year-old suspect Carlton McPherson was arrested and later charged with murder. Police described him as having mental health problems and said he had been out on bail for a previous assault in October.
“Operation Fare Play,” a plan announced Monday, will deploy about 800 officers to stations to address fare evasion and related crimes, signaling a greater focus on transit safety, he said. NBC News.
A survey released last week found that New Yorkers are generally dissatisfied with the quality of public transportation and many are afraid to use it, citing safety concerns. Criminal acts, accidents, jumps onto the tracks and delays due to failures are frequently reported.

Since taking office in January 2022, Mayor Adams, former NYPD, announced several times that the number of police officers in the chaotic NYC Subway would be doubled. But the violence has continued. So far this year three people have been shot to death in the subway.
Gov. Kathy Hochul this month deployed 750 National Guardsmen along with 250 state and MTA police to search passengers’ belongings at the busiest stations, citing violent incidents such as the near-fatal slashing of a Metro driver’s neck and the postal worker kicked onto the rails. A woman also suffered an amputation when she was pushed onto the tracks by her Hispanic boyfriend. Also on Thursday another person was fatally run over at a stop in the Bronx.
