A man is allegedly responsible for an attack against several people on different streets in Rockford, Illinois. The man, who is already in custody, stabbed the victims, resulting in four people dead and five more injured.
The Rockford Police Department received the first emergency calls this Wednesday, March 27, around 1:14 p.m. Officers went to 2300 Holmes, southeast of the city.
When officers arrived at the scene they discovered that there were several crime scenes, where a suspect had stabbed several people. According to the police report, the individual attacked the victims on Cleveland Avenue, Eggleston Road and Holmes Street.
“Large police presence in the area of Eggleston Road and Cleveland Avenue. Please be patient while we investigate and avoid the area until further notice,” they warned on their social networks.
Emergency services and several agents from both the Rockford police and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene to begin an investigation into the motives that led the suspect to attack so many people.
A woman tried to escape, but was stabbed
Sheriff Gary Caruana of Winnebago County revealed that there was a home invasion near Florence Street and Eggleston Road. The woman who was inside the home managed to escape, but the suspect caught up with her and stabbed her in the hands and face. .
At the time of the attack, another person who noticed everything, tried to defend the victim, but was also seriously injured by stabbing. The woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Nine people were attacked by the same man
While the officers were investigating, they discovered the victims, who in total were nine people injured, some with the knife and others, they did not specify how they were affected.
Rockford police said a total of four people were killed in the city, one remains in critical condition and four others were injured. Four of the injured are at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
The Rockford Fire Department also shared that one of the victims was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but did not survive.
The identities of all those affected were not revealed by the police, as an investigation into what happened is underway. According to Rockford police, the attack was carried out by a single person, no others were involved.
Although time was short, the Postal Inspection Service confirmed that a United States Postal Service mail carrier was one of the victims in the incident. “At this time, there are no additional details we can provide as this is an active investigation. “Postal inspectors are on scene with the Rockford Police Department and other first responders,” they said in a statement.
The suspect is questioned by the authorities
One of the officers managed to capture the suspect, whose identity was not revealed. He is currently being held so detectives can conduct questioning, authorities said at a conference.
To date, no charges have been filed against him, and the investigation continues, in which federal agents also participate.
“An adult male attacked and stabbed several people in the Cleveland/Holmes/Eggleston area. The alleged suspect is in custody. More updates will be posted here,” officials wrote.
Police are asking people to avoid the area as officers are still investigating the crime.
“I think, like most Rockfordians, I am completely shocked by this act of violence and the impact it is now having on the lives of several families, so certainly, my prayers are with them as they are just beginning to deal with this. with what will be some really difficult days and weeks ahead,” said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara.
The City of Rockford announced that it has teamed up with Rosecrance and Rockford Public Schools to offer free counseling and emotional support services to loved ones of those affected as well as neighborhood residents.
Services will be available beginning at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, March 28 at Flinn High School, 525 Ohio Parkway.
