San Juan – The arrival of more than 46,000 cruise passengers between March 22 and 31 and hotel occupancy projections exceeding 91% predict great activity in Puerto Rico’s tourism sector this Easter.
“We can affirm that tourism is experiencing an excellent season during the traditional “Spring Break” and Easter holidays, highlighted this Wednesday the executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR), Carlos Mercado Santiago.
So far, the highest percentages of hotel registrations are found in regions outside the metropolitan area, with an average of 94%, according to the CTPR statement.
Regarding the Paradores of Puerto Rico, a program created by the Tourism Company in 1973, they have reported 100% of their rooms full.
The CTPR noted that these projections may continue to increase in the coming days, as a result of last-minute reservations.
Mercado Santiago added that preliminary projections indicate that the total collection for the month of March for room tax will exceed $15 million dollars, compared to the same month in 2023, when collections of 13.7 million were reported.
This would make it the highest grossing month in the history of tourism in Puerto Rico.
For its part, the cruise sector will contribute approximately $6,048,958 to the local treasury with eleven departures from the port of San Juan with around 16,000 passengers, and nine transit stops with 30,560 passengers.
Mercado Santiago stressed that projections in all sectors continue to be “very encouraging” and that the local tourism sector is expected to continue significantly increasing its contribution to the island’s economy.
