The Milwaukee Brewers won three runs to the New York Mets by one in a duel that almost ended the first brawl of 2024 in the Major Leagues.
This after in the eighth inning, Rhys Hoskins tried to avoid a double play, going with his cleats towards the humanity of Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil, who, when unable to take the throw from third baseman Brett Baty, shouted several expletives at first baseman Brewers point guard, who, lying on second base, did not seem concerned until the benches emptied.
Although the slide ended up being declared legal, McNeil immediately turned around and began yelling in the direction of Hoskins, who was still lying on the ground. He also began to head to the visiting dugout, which caused both benches to quickly empty.
The umpires had to separate both players while their teammates came out of the bullpens and benches, causing the game to be delayed for several minutes.
Regarding the play, McNeil commented: “There are clean slides and dirty slides. But there are plays that are gray. Unfortunately, it was ruled a clean slip, so let’s leave it at that.”
For his part, Hoskins refuted: “I don’t have much to say about it. He told me things I can’t say here. I have played many times in this stadium. They just seem to complain when things don’t go well. I think this is one of those moments. Maybe he lost the intensity of the game. I just try to play hard and the right way.”
