Donald Trump and his co-defendants in the Georgia electoral subversion case appealed this Friday a judge’s ruling that did not disqualify Fulton County Prosecutor Fani Willis, questioned for her personal relationship with another prosecutor in the case.

Defense attorneys asked the Georgia Court of Appeals to overturn Judge Scott McAfee’s initial decision, announced on March 14, and allow Willis to continue in the case.

The appeal alleges that Willis has compromised the credibility of his office and violated the ethical standards required for his position. The defenders argue that her presence in the case undermines the integrity of the judicial process, the EFE news agency published.

The case involves Donald Trump and 18 other people accused of conspiracy to interfere in the 2020 presidential election, in which the Republican was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden by a narrow margin of votes.

After an investigation of more than three years, Fani Willis built the case against the former president and used the RICO law against him, known for being used against members of the mafia and applied to guarantee that the leaders of a criminal association, and not only his subordinates, accountable to justice.

The process has been complex and has required the hiring of several prosecutors, including Nathan Wade, who maintained a personal relationship with Willis for several months after joining the team. Although the romance ended last summer, their connection has come under scrutiny in the case.

The relationship between Fani Willis and Nathan Wade was publicly revealed by Michael Roman, campaign director of one of the accused along with Trump, who stated that the prosecutor benefited financially from the relationship, by being taken on luxurious vacations paid for by her ex-partner.

The situation has raised questions about Willis’s impartiality and ethical handling of the case, leading defense attorneys to challenge his participation in the judicial process.

Meanwhile, relatives of the accused and Trump supporters are closely following the development of the case. They hope the appeal will result in a fair and impartial review of the circumstances surrounding the Georgia election subversion case.
