Members of the family of peasant leader César Chávez on Friday endorsed President Biden’s re-election candidacy in the 2024 elections, according to the Biden campaign.
The endorsement was announced ahead of a Robert F. Kennedy Jr. event Saturday in which the independent candidate invoked the famed union leader. The independent candidate will host a campaign event in Los Angeles titled “celebrating the life and legacy of César Chávez.”
In a statement released today, the seven children of César and Helen Chávez, as well as other family members, indicated that the Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris formula is “the best option for the United States.”
“We feel bonds of affection and respect for President Biden, because his character and actions consistently reflect the genuine legacy of our father César Chávez,” they noted.
Family members added that Biden has consistently fought for farmworkers and, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, made sure they were prioritized for early access to the vaccine, given that these workers were among those hardest hit by the disease and died at much higher rates than other groups.
“In contrast, Donald Trump and (independent candidate) Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spread disinformation and conspiracy theories about the pandemic that helped persuade people not to get vaccinated and take necessary precautions. “People died,” they lamented.
Family members added that the president is “absolutely committed” to the immigrant workers who “work hard and pay taxes and who support key parts of the American economy.”
They also recalled that on his first day in the White House, Biden placed a bronze statue of César Chávez, one of the founders of the United Farm Workers (UFW), union in the Oval Office.
That statue “is a reminder that President Biden understands the power of organizing and working people and recognizes the impact of my grandfather’s legacy to continue mobilizing our communities to action,” said Julie Chávez Rodríguez, granddaughter of the leader and board of directors of the Biden campaign.
