Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon was a guest in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” where he warned that “it’s possible” that House Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican, could be overthrown if he tries to approve aid to Ukraine.
Kristen Welker spoke with Republican Don Bacon, who suggested that Johnson could possibly lose his job as president for approving aid to Ukraine before the House, “it’s likely,” the lawmaker said.
“We have one or two people who don’t work as a team. “They prefer to enjoy the spotlight, social media,” Bacon added for NBC. “It’s a very narrow majority and one or two people can make us a minority,” she said.
Bacon’s comments come after Johnson indicated at a news conference this month that he will address aid to Ukraine once the House returns in April.
But some hardline conservatives, such as Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., have opposed such Ukraine aid efforts.
The Nebraska representative said in the interview that he is in favor of the support provided to Ukraine, and noted that he has a partnership with three representatives; from Maine, Pennsylvania and Hawaii where they are working with a bill that helps the country that has been in conflict since February 2022.
The Republican believes that if some Democrats unite they could save Johnson’s presidency.
Confiscate frozen Russian assets
For his part, Mike Johnson hopes to pass a package that includes aid for Ukraine when the House returns from recess and would like the package to have “some important innovations.”
Johnson raised the possibilities of granting a loan to Ukraine as an example in a talk on “Trey Gowdy’s Sunday Night in America.”
Likewise, the representative of Louisiana also mentioned the REPO Act for Ukrainians, which would authorize the president to confiscate Russian sovereign assets frozen in the United States and deliver them to Ukraine to use against Russia.
Bacon in his interview indicated that aid to Ukraine may possibly be put to a vote, saying that he has a “commitment from the speaker and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee that we are going to put this on the floor and get a vote,” according to NBC reported.
