A police dog is hailed as a hero after finding a missing child early Friday morning in the woods in DeLand, Florida, the DeLand Police Department reported.
Authorities, along with other search and rescue teams, launched a massive search operation focused on a wooded area behind the family’s home. It was at this point that the help of the K-9 police dog named Midnight was requested, as well as his handler, Officer Damon Clark.
Midnight, who is trained to search for narcotics and missing persons, reportedly used the boy’s blanket to catch his scent. He then followed the trail, and at that moment the dog and Clark came to a wooded area.
After some time of searching, Midnight and Clark found the boy in the woods, who did not suffer any injuries or blows, and was able to be returned to his family safe and sound. DeLand police praised the work of all the teams involved, noting that it has been the result they always hope for in disappearance situations, and it is a safe return.
Local authorities note that Midnight has been working with the DeLand Police Department since 2022, joining the ranks of other police K-9 dogs across the country that have played a crucial role in locating missing children.
In February, a K-9 dog in Auburn, Massachusetts, followed the scent of a missing 12-year-old boy for two miles to locate him in frigid temperatures. Similarly, in January, another K-9 dog named Mary Lu from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida helped find a missing 11-year-old girl who was inside a locked bathroom. in a park.
