Winning a lottery prize is literally like “picking a needle in a haystack,” because the chances of doing so are slim. So those who have enjoyed this privilege must take all precautions with their winning ticket so as not to lose the prize.

However, there are lottery winners who are so taken by surprise by the situation that they make mistakes that could literally cost them the chance to become millionaires, since it prevents them from collecting their prizes.

That’s what happened to a woman from Taizhou, China, known as Miss Ai, who faced the bitter reality of losing a lottery prize equivalent to $930,000, because her winning ticket ended up in pieces.

The incident occurred on March 22, when Miss Ai and her husband were having dinner with 2 other couples. While the men enjoyed their drinks, the women decided to pass the time by visiting a nearby lottery store. There, after buying a “scratch-off” ticket, they celebrated by winning 100 yuan (about $14). Buoyed by their luck, each of the women bought another lottery ticket.

Joy turned to despair the next day, when the lottery results were announced and Miss Ai realized that her ticket was the winner of the $930,000 jackpot. However, her excitement soon turned to distress when she discovered that the bill had ended up in her pants and she had already been washed 3 times, under the assumption that it had not been washed.

Despite her efforts to recover the damaged ticket, Miss Ai encountered a dead end when the lottery center informed her that only the holder of the complete ticket could claim the prize.

Dejected by the loss, Miss Ai expressed her grief, stating: “I can’t think about it. It hurts just to think about it. How can someone not be heartbroken? [por esto]?”
