A college student who lived in California was found dead in a parking lot near a bridge in Maine last Sunday.
According to Thompsan police, they responded to a call around 7:00 am about the discovery of a woman, whose identity was initially not revealed, but later, Safa Zaki, president of Bowdoin College, where she was studying, confirmed who was called Qingyang Zhan, 20 years old.
Upon being found, Zhan, who was also known as “K”, was transferred to the Legal Medical Service to perform the corresponding autopsy, but her death was confirmed. At the moment, the results of the autopsy are still pending, and are expected to be important in determining the causes of her death.
Local authorities clarified that there is no threat to the public, but the investigation is still ongoing.
Zhan was an international student born in Shanghai, China, who had resided in the United States since 2019 and had attended school in California before enrolling at Bowdoin College in fall 2021.
“Many will remember his warmth and kindness,” Zaki wrote in a statement. “This news is very difficult to process, especially because we still do not know the circumstances of “K”’s death. Please take care of yourselves and others and take advantage of opportunities to come together.”
Meanwhile, Jean Yarbrough, professor of social sciences, and Gary M. Pendy Sr., Zhan’s academic advisor, described her as a student “deeply interested in major theological and philosophical questions.”
Bowdoin College has extended counseling hours for students this week in response to Zhan’s death.
“K’s death is a devastating tragedy for his parents, his brother, other loved ones, as well as his friends, classmates, and our entire Bowdoin community,” Zaki added. “This news is very difficult to process, especially because we still do not know the circumstances of “K”’s death. Please take care of yourselves and others and take advantage of opportunities to come together.”
