The former boxer and owner of the Golden Promotions promotion, Óscar de la Hoya, sent a strong message to Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez in the run-up to his fight against Jaime Munguía that recalled the bad relationship that both have had for some time.
Although in the past both de la Hoya and Canelo Álvarez worked together and shared businesses, now it seems that their bond is a thing of the past and for that reason the comment arose in which he declared the Mexican as his “son.”
The statements came due to the complexity of the negotiations for the fight against Munguía and that continued in the official presentation of the event, where Tapatío ignored De La Hoya completely and even put some clauses that the former world champion did not accept.
“(Speaking of the clauses) you can’t be at the press conference, you can’t take photographs, you can’t give interviews, what are you talking about? It’s like being in church. Munguía respects him, I respect him, but we have to provoke something and guess who has to do it,” de la hoya said in a recent interview.
The interviewer’s response was immediate, questioning Canelo Álvarez’s demands and it was there that De la Hoya sent his strong message.
“Okay, okay, he knows who his dad is,” he added.
Part of the grudges between De la Hoya and Canelo Álvarez, in addition to the old date, was because the unified champion supposedly forced his entourage not to negotiate the fight directly, but through third parties such as with Fernando Beltrán, Munguía’s representative.
Before closing, De La Hoya gave his prediction for the fight and although the favorite is Canelo Álvarez, he believes that Munguía can surprise thanks to the preparation he is having with the experienced trainer Freddy Roach.
