A bill introduced by House Republicans was not received as warmly as they might expect, with some lawmakers planning to rename Washington’s Dulles International Airport after Donald J. Trump, in honor of the former president.
The bill was referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for consideration, introduced by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, along with six other lawmakers who co-sponsored the bill.
“The best president of my life”
“Freedom. Prosperity. Force. That’s what America stood for under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, the best president of my lifetime. And that is why I am introducing legislation to rename Dulles Donald J. Trump International Airport.” wrote Guy Reschenthaler on his X account.
ABC News reported that Republican Reschenthaler introduced the legislation last Friday as its sponsor. Six representatives signed on as cosponsors: Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Troy Nehls of Texas, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Barry Moore of Alabama and Mike Waltz of Florida.
It is not known exactly what path the initiative may take in the House of Representatives, which is mostly made up of the Republican Party. What could happen is that upon reaching the Senate she will be arrested, since it is made up mostly of the Democratic Party.
“Name a federal prison”
Democrats did not remain silent after learning about the controversial and unexpected bill, such as Representative Gerry Connolly, who posted that Republicans should look for a prison to name after the former president.
“Donald Trump faces 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, he would suggest they look for a federal prison,” Connolly argued.
Rep. Abigail Spanberger called the bill “ridiculous”: “Congress must act on urgent issues like reauthorizing the FAA and passing the national security supplement.”
He continued: “However, this is what the Republican leadership of a member of the House of Representatives is focused on; rename Virginia Dulles Airport after Trump,” Spanberger wrote in X.
Why is the Airport called Dulles?
Washington Dulles International Airport is located 20 miles west of the Central Business District of Washington, DC, in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is named after John Foster Dulles, United States Secretary of State under Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. Since 1984 it has been known by this name.
Washington Airport is the primary hub for United Airlines and is a major airport for JetBlue Airways. It is the main base for Northwest Airlink’s regional airline, Compass Airlines. It was formally dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
