The Port St. Lucie Police Department in Florida reported the identity of the man who shot his wife to death in front of their two children, and after fleeing, committed suicide. According to the investigation, the individual was a former lieutenant of the Battle Creek police in Michigan.
Port St. Lucie police said Ray Felix, 60, had been with the Battle Creek Police Department as a lieutenant and had already retired a few years ago.
Florida authorities said Ray Felix approached his ex-wife, Jamie Felix, 45, and their two children, ages 17 and 10, at a local business, and forced them into a car he rented.
The man confronted his wife about the divorce
When the family was inside the vehicle, Ray confronted Jamie about her divorce, and forced her to send an email to her coworkers at the Manatee-K8 school, who upon reading it immediately alerted the authorities.
Coworkers of Jamie, who was a teacher, told police they had received a “suspicious email” and were concerned because they knew she was divorcing Ray Felix, News Channel 3 reported.
Disguised with a gun in his hand
Jamie Felix and her two sons were walking to the parking lot when Ray approached them in disguise with a firearm in his hand. He then made them get into a red Nissan rental car. The four of them returned to the business to look for Jamie’s truck.
The man forced his oldest son to drive the vehicle, while pointing the gun at the children’s mother, police said. The authorities were already investigating the case as soon as they received the call from Jamie’s colleagues.
Port St. Lucie authorities located the car on Belvedere Road in West Palm Beach. Detectives contacted the West Palm Beach Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene, they found his wife and her children suffering from gunshot wounds.
The former lieutenant shot himself in the head
According to the agents’ report, Jamie Felix received several gunshot wounds when they stopped in the parking lot of a hotel in Belvedere, all in the presence of the two children, who were unharmed.
After killing his ex-wife, Ray fled the scene. West Palm Beach officers located Ray and attempted to approach him, but he shot himself in the head. He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
“Members of the Port St. Lucie Police Department and our community were heartbroken by the tragic incident that occurred Friday night,” Port St. Lucie Police Chief Richard Del Toro said in a statement.
