The start of the New York Yankees season in 2024 has been extraordinary. The Bronx team started by winning its first five games in a row to have the best start to a campaign since 2003.
This great performance of the New York team at the start of the season is largely thanks to the new acquisitions to the squad that helped raise the level of the team. As is the case with Alex Verdugo, who seems to have adapted to the Yankees quite quickly.
The outfielder of Mexican descent earned his place as a left fielder in the Yankees’ starting lineup. In addition, Verdugo recently commented on the great friendship he has generated with his new teammates.
“Soto is like a dog, and we look like hungry dogs right now. I’m very excited to be here with my boys. We are all friends here; You can see how Aaron encourages us; “I love that,” Verdugo expressed to YES Network.
The Yankees have just swept the Houston Astros as visitors in a series that was experienced with a lot of emotion and Verdugo himself recognized the intensity with which those three games were played against the Texan team.
“We came from playing a series that looked like a playoff, with atmosphere and a lot of noise. We maintained a high intensity, making plays on defense, running the bases well and hitting important hits; as it should be to be focused throughout the season,” explained the gardener.
Verdugo has not had his best offensive performance at the start of the season. He has only had three hits in 18 at-bats for an average of .167. However, the Mexican has seemed solid in defense and eager to continue growing within the Yankees.
Key season for Verdugo
Both Verdugo and Soto came to the Yankees via trade with a contract that expires at the end of the season. Both players, and especially Verdugo, will have to show that they are valuable to the New York organization if they want to get a new agreement for 2025.
That is why this season will be key for the Mexican outfielder. Who has already had good seasons with the Red Sox and Dodgers and who at 27 years old will look for a long-term contract with the Yankees, although he must first show what he is made of in 2024.
