On its 119th anniversary, Boca Juniors presented the new jersey that the team will use this season, paying tribute to its Swedish origins in the institution’s colors.
“On the day of our anniversary, a tribute to our origins. The new third shirt is now available,” the club announced through a publication on the X social network.
The message is accompanied by a video in which several club players, including Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, are seen aboard a ship waving the Swedish flag.
The institution founded by a group of young Genoese adopted the blue and yellow colors from an anecdote in the port of Buenos Aires, when they decided to use the colors of a ship flying the Swedish flag to differentiate themselves from other clubs in the country.
Interestingly, the team’s main sponsor, Betsson, is a Swedish online gambling company.
The design, which includes the cross of the Swedish banner, was presented along with photographic montages that include some of the founders such as Teodoro Farenga, as well as other important names in the history of Boca Juniors, such as Viktor Sulèiè, the Slovenian architect responsible for the construction of ‘La Bombonera’.
“The Boca shirt has undergone several modifications to its models throughout history. Its colors, however, only varied in the first two years of life, and from 1907, the blue and gold remained impregnated in the skin of the Xeneizes until today,” the entity explains on its website about the history of the colors of the club.
The team will debut tonight in the Copa Sudamericana on its visit to Bolivia to face Nacional de Potosí.
