Virginia Democrats have increased their criticism of a proposal introduced by state House Republicans to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after former President Donald J. Trump.

“Donald Trump faces 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, he would suggest they look for a federal prison,” Rep. Gerry Connolly first wrote.

While Rep. Jennifer Wexton, whose district also partially includes Dulles, also criticized the bill in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“This is just another in a long line of cases in which extremist House Republicans have shown how unserious and delusional they are,” Wexton said Tuesday. “Let’s get to work on the real issues the American people sent us here for: not renaming an airport after someone who sought to undermine our democracy.”

For his part, Representative Don Beyer, also of Virginia, recalled when then-President Trump issued his executive order banning entry to people from certain Muslim-majority countries in 2017, and that lawmakers went to Dulles to push for legal representation for detainees.

“I also remember Republicans like those who just introduced legislation to rename that airport after Trump, hiding and giving unconvincing answers when asked about the chaos and suffering that Trump’s bigotry caused,” he said. in a statement reported by POLITICO.

He added: “They know our airport will never be named after Trump, but that’s not the point: the point is to suck up to their beloved leader.”

They defend the project

The initiative was introduced by Republican Congressman Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, along with six other legislators who co-sponsored the bill.

Six representatives signed on as cosponsors: Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Troy Nehls of Texas, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Barry Moore of Alabama and Mike Waltz of Florida.

In a press release about the bill, Reschenthaler said the United States “has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump.”

“As millions of domestic and international travelers pass through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ when they land on American soil,” argued Reschenthaler.

For his part, in a statement to The Hill, Gosar said he “does not see a more appropriate recognition than naming both airports in our nation’s capital after two of America’s greatest presidents.”

“I find the feigned outrage of some on the left regarding the renaming of Dulles Airport after Donald Trump, when these same individuals celebrated the renaming of the airport in Little Rock after the corrupt and Predator-in-Chief, ridiculous. [el ex presidente Clinton]”he added.
