The diplomatic personnel stationed in Ecuador returned to Mexico through a commercial flight with the support of allied embassies, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena announced this Saturday.

Bárcena, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that Mexico will always prioritize the security and rights of its diplomatic personnel.

“On instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, our diplomatic staff returns to Mexico from Quito via commercial flights with the support of friendly embassies,” he declared in a statement, cited by the EFE news agency.

This return occurred after the breakdown of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the Ecuadorian government of Daniel Noboa, after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito with the purpose of capturing former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.

López Obrador thanked the gestures of solidarity from leaders and civil organizations, both national and international, in the face of what he described as a “painful matter.” “We appreciate the solidarity of leaders, leaders and civil organizations from different countries, including ours, after the attack on the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador,” added the president.

On the other hand, the secretary general of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, urged “dialogue” and announced that he will request a meeting of the organization’s Permanent Council to address tensions between both nations.

The president of the Mexican Senate, Ana Lilia Rivera, also recalled that the Ecuadorian authorities have the obligation to protect the Mexican embassy, its properties and documents, under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

“From the Senate of Mexico we will be vigilant to ensure that this is the case,” said Rivera, who also made a respectful call to the Assembly of Ecuador to establish a dialogue that contributes to overcoming this diplomatic crisis, prioritizing the peaceful solution of controversies.

Furthermore, Mexico announced its intention to appeal to the International Court of Justice to denounce Ecuador’s responsibility for alleged violations of International Law.
